Competitors chat before beginning the 200-mile Iditasport Human Powered Race in Knik, Alaska. The 2014 event is a revival of the legendary 1980's race, which was the first of its kind to put foot and bicycle power to the test against a trail normally only traversed by dogsled or snowmachine. The original competition paved the way for other endurance races in the far north and spurred a number of innovations in outdoor equipment, including the now-ubiquitous fat tire bicycle.
