UAA Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) Associate Professor of Natural Resource Management and Policy Jennifer Schmidt along with NSF student intern and biological sciences major Bradley Smith place mobile stations and fly drones to map an area of the Anchorage hillside scheduled for removal of flammable vegetation to reduce wildfire activity and give fire fighters a safe space to operate. The work is part of Schmidt's ongoing research which involves working with community stakeholders and government agencies to identify and mitigate wildfire hazards in the Anchorage area.
